The founder members of My Medical Choice met in 2020 through like-minded local action groups. We were concerned that our absolute right to bodily autonomy was being gradually eroded.
We are a genuine grassroots organisation, funded exclusively by a founder member in our early stages. Funds raised through subscriptions are used to improve the website, develop additional services, and support other people-led organisations and community projects.
As a private members’ association (PMA), privacy is at the heart of everything we do. Only founder members who know each other personally can hold administrative positions, helping to ensure the safety and confidentiality of all members. Unlike many organisations, My Medical Choice guarantees that we do not harvest personal data, nor do we sell or routinely share it with third parties.
Members of our organisation who work within the NHS shared concerns about the growing pressures caused by staff shortages and long working hours. They explained that medical errors can and do happen, sometimes with devastating consequences.
We recognised that one of the greatest challenges in emergency healthcare occurs when patients are unconscious or unable to communicate important medical information. We therefore resolved to create a practical solution.
To address these concerns, we developed a comprehensive medical emergency alert system for members. The system:
By giving emergency services and A&E staff rapid access to accurate patient information, the system helps reduce guesswork, minimise medical errors, and improve patient care. This benefits both patients and the NHS alike.
A key concern for many people is the possibility of receiving medical treatments they do not want while unconscious or unable to communicate their wishes. This is particularly significant for those with concerns surrounding routine blood transfusions.
To address this, My Medical Choice created a comprehensive Advance Decision Notice (commonly known as a Living Will). When completed correctly, this document allows members’ healthcare directives to become legally binding.
Our medical-alert system also notifies emergency services that an Advance Decision Notice is in place and provides secure online access to the document when required.
For members concerned about the potential need for blood transfusions, we established the National Blood Donor Database of private blood donors.
In addition, we produced educational materials and consultation packs covering own-blood and bloodless surgical procedures, designed to support members during planned surgical consultations and appointments.
My Medical Choice exists to protect its members’ healthcare choices and ensure they remain firmly in control of their bodily autonomy.
We remain committed to preserving those principles and continuing to develop services that support informed medical choice, privacy, and patient empowerment.
At My Medical Choice, we stand by your side as you navigate life’s most important healthcare decisions. We respect your choices, empower your voice, and provide the tools you need to take control.
